Blue Chip Bulldog: Trades for 10/15/09

  • moo · 2 months ago
I anticipate that I will be shorting the market tomorrow. I do not see us exceeding today's high of 1096.56 by more than 25 points.

We have arrived very close to my road map post 1120 of $SPX 50% fib. Also we are near the end of October timeframe.
    http://bluechipbulldog.blogspot.com/2009/08/end...

Tomorrow's close may actually show a flat doji day with a lot of volatility and the time to short with vigor may come starting Monday. We shall see.

Of course everything is subject to change...Hope everyone had a profitable trading day.
  • Teich50 · 2 months ago
    Hi Moo.

Are you expecting a 10% correction from SPX 1120? I have been scaling into my /ES short since 1075. Yeah it was too early, but I was able to reduce my cost basis by managing my position every day.

Btw, Carl Futia is calling for a 20-30 point break [ http://carlfutia.blogspot.com/2009/10/some-obse... ] from the /ES 1094 level.
  • moo · 2 months ago
a pullback to 1060-1065 is what I'm looking at and it looks as though Carl has the same area of interest. Thanks.
  • Teich50 · 2 months ago
Right, but the $64k question is: do we pull back from /ES 1094 or /ES 1120?
  • moo · 2 months ago
I think from 1120....I can easily see up ramp up tomorrow morning on all the good news from GOOG, IBM and then pull back from there... but who knows for sure.
  • Teich50 · 2 months ago
Thanks for your comments again. I think IBM will sell off tomorrow, at least in the early morning. This should drag $SPX down by $COMPQ will not be affected too much.

I am making sure that I enough dry powder left to add to my /ES short to 1120+.
  • Rambo · 2 months ago
I started my short position today with TZA. However, I have 12 long positions. All under 6.00. CYTK, CRTP, IEC, RTK, AUTH, LWLG.OB, AHR, AFN etc, etc.

    Moo/Brinks,

You guys are the best. Thanks for your willingness to share your thoughts...best of luck
  • moo · 2 months ago
    Brinkley,

Your analysis has been on spot on. Again. Thank You.

Sure glad we didn't ask you to present the bearish case when the charts were telling you we're going higher.
I for one am very grateful you told us that the setup suggests we're headed higher, but also advised caution.

    Look at us now.

    You are amazing.
  • Brinkley · 2 months ago
And you are too kind. Thank you.
  • MovinFwd · 2 months ago
    Moo and brinkley,

Once again thank you for good info that is well presented. And good commenters; I like minireaper, inthepink, the /ES folks; 'cause I'm an /ES kind of guy. And, well, just everybody.

And very little drama, just the facts ma'am. Yes I admit I do have other personalities and like to sometimes be silly or even egg headed from time to time, but what a cool, calm place to be here on BCB.

Just sayin'. Not puttin' anyone down or comparing.

    Best Regards :-)

$TICK intensity is waning a bit on the 60 day ema on the 1min from almost 100 or so to -56 and is currently downwardly sloping. We have crossed the zero line 3 times already and we are oscillating around VWAP on /ES more times than I care to count. In summary, I am not day trading. This is pure "chop"....
  • Teich50 · 2 months ago
I think /ES is coiling between 1080 and 1090, if we include the overnight session...

I'm currently showing a vwap price of 1085 and we stand just above that on the /ES. We are also above the pivot. It's looking like a range bound consolidation day. I will likely be a spectator unless another SRZ pops out of the wood work.

    Good trading to everyone.

Today could end up being a sell the news day ... C is going to take a hit on both price and volume

When pondering the US Dollar over the past week I remember that I had this tucked away on my computer. This is from Jesse's Cafe Americain a few months ago about the dollar and stock strength and weakness and what it all means. To summarize:

    1) when the dollar and stocks are both up, we are in a true bull market with a healthy, strong economy.
    2) when the dollar is down and stocks are up, we are in a 'fake' bull market (see 2003-2007) where equities are rising only because the dollar is falling and exports become cheaper, but it is not really healthy or sustainable.
    3) when the dollar is rising and equities are falling, we are experiencing deflation (last fall.)
    4) when the dollar falls and equities fall too, well, game over basically.

    Good luck to everyone today!
  • urszula · 2 months ago
    Love Jesse's site, visit often.
    Thanks for this, Fish.

TBT - I decided to roll the calls out to Dec and up a couple of strikes. This allowed me to take a good chunk of money off the table while extending the position. Essentially I am now in this trade for .65 per contract. Since I do believe that interest rates have nowhere to go but up, this lets me sit in the position longer. If TBT pulls back, say $2 to 45, which is about all I think it will do if that, these lower delta options will only lose less than $1 while the higher delta ones would lose about $1.60, depending on when this happens.

    Thanks Morisse!

  • aviat72 · 2 months ago
$GOOG IV not rising as normal. 520-540 strangle lost 5.00 since last night's close. Perhaps $GS action spooked mo-mo crowd and bought in Vol sellers.

This strangle is currently bid at 14.80. Last night you could get 20 for it. Typically IV rise would take care of the theta crush but not today.
  • SirFrankie · 2 months ago
Is that suggesting that Goog earnings won't move the stock much? I'm playing the IV crush on the OCTs. Bought 2 Cal spreads OCT/NOV, Put Cal at 480 and Call Cal at 560. Breakevens at 462 and 587.
  • Rosabarba · 2 months ago
OIH, just a stairway to heaven.

Brinkley gets a big cupcake with valentine sprinkles on this one from me for observations made more than a month ago. I reconsidered OIH puts and closed them for a little more than break even. If I had gone long (and stuck with the full position) a bit earlier than I did, I would be sitting on a mountain of profit. As it is, I'm sitting on perhaps a nice-sized haystack and happy for it.

Big hugs from the filthy miner, b. ;-)
  • moo · 2 months ago

  • Brinkley · 2 months ago
Well, this has turned into quite a day. My MA long from a few days ago has launched, and the oils I've been swinging (OIH, DO, USO, GMXR, HES, ATPG, CRZO) are fantastic. SUN, added this morning is also still going strong. ISRG has been holding just off the highs and may try to do something ahead of its Tuesday earnings, while CME looks very good on the daily chart following its pullback and gap fill but isn't doing a whole lot yet today. Add to that the steel stocks and POT, AGU, and no complaints here. I still have some other odds and ends (BCRX, DNDN, JOYG, AMLN among others), but they're mostly dozing today. Stops in place and moved up to protect gains.
  • Doji Girl · 2 months ago
When you raise your stops do you use a percentage of the price or just look at the swing lows and put it there? I struggle with this constantly...I either make them too tight and get stopped out or give back too much.
  • Sentiment_Al · 2 months ago
I think we just need to admit there are many things we cannot predict. How could there possibly be a solution to this issue? These are at best odds we are playing. I think the only approach is cost-benefit analysis: what is the risk of stopping out versus the risk of giving too much back? I like moo's technique of using a fixed stop early on, then a trailing stop if the trade goes in the right direction a bit -- not because it's perfect but because it changes along with my changing costs-benefits. Early in the trade my biggest risk is completely screwing up the direction, and late in the trade I can risk some profits in order to try to follow a trend that has established itself. There's more, of course, but that's one basic sort of answer....
  • Doji Girl · 2 months ago
I do start out with a fixed stop and then try to move up the stop to lock in a profit once it gets going in my direction. I only recently started experimenting with trailing stops. I've always trailed my stop up manually using prior swing lows as a stop. This works well in swing trades but now that I am starting to do more day trades I find I give too much back and get stopped out anyway. I guess there isn't a 1 size fits all solution to this.
  • bender_b_rodriguez · 2 months ago
Hi brinkley, I also am happy with the move in MA (still have some calls). what is your short term target...I didn't think it would break $225, but am glad I was wrong.

Not enough momo today. I took my shots.

Real trades 3 fas longs, profit stops killed and filled below entries -$49

    Sim Trades:
FAZ 5k long from yesterday +2300 (stopped out in the gap zone under the open price)
TZA +500 stop in, trade still working
ICE went long this morning at support +500 hit, I took it into the 5min 50ma and sold

    Later All

More than plenty of momo in the oil sector-- has been on a tear. : ) How've you been, Dutch?
  • Dutch · 2 months ago
Doing ok. Just treading water last couple months trading. Money management has been good, I'm at the highest I've been since my April low.

I have not been trading oil, tried to catch OIH back at 115 on a nice set up and we opened up that Monday (I think it was) with a big gap above it and it never pulled back for a clean entry for my style.

TAZ, I placed a small Vegas Style Lotto trade a few minutes ago....Thought of you cause of the "LOTTO" aspect...more like a small gamble if you ask me..... 10% probability of success...

Bought the BIDU OCT 420 call for 85 cents on the sell off.... may sell 1/2 if BIDU can make a run into the close and have a free roll... in any case, it is a small trade and has already been written off as a loss....Would be nice to see GOOG blow away earnings and announce a 2 for 1 split...now that would make cause the shorts a lot of pain!!

    Have a great day everyone!!

FWIW, IMO the big move in the GBP was mostly due to a report that QE will be ending soon. Now if the US is really serious about a strong dollar (instead of jawboning it), they'd start making the same statements. The only problem with that is bonds would fly!

Wow....Rosa: you were amazingly spot-on about the Earnings straddle. They squeezed the volatility right out of both the calls and the puts on GS this morning.

Pros at work, sold the Volatility.
  • Rosabarba · 2 months ago
Unless its a shocker (and GS at this point would be one of the least likely candidates for an earnings shocker), IV crush will beat the price move for the short-dated options. They don't get those fancy corner offices for nothing. :-)
  • aviat72 · 2 months ago
Yup played that. Bought 195 Call Calendar Spread and 190 Put Calendar Spread (Sold Oct/Bought Nov). IV Crush resulted in about 15% gain overnight.

Selling the naked strangle would have worked even better. 195-190 was yielding close to 6 at close, now it is down to 2. I was afraid of big moves though in retrospect it might have been a gamble worth taking since GS was going to beat so downside surprise was limited and after the run up and Whitney downgrade, it was unlikely to run above 200.

I am no sure whether I would do the naked strangle on GOOG. It has the same character: Run up into earnings which are expected to be positive. But Goog tends to pin so still might be worth it.
  • eastvillboy · 2 months ago
    I appreciate these discussions guys.

I can't sell naked options in the accounts I trade options in so I can't execute these types of strategies.

I took at breakout play on it last year with 10,000 shares. I didn't double check the volume and my order pushed the bid, which the largest chunk filled at the market on the highest tick and then I got hit for a quick loss and no more volume showed up. That sucked. Was a good lesson.

  • Brinkley · 2 months ago
Hi, No-- Yes, I saw that, although technically the h/s should occur following a preceding uptrend. Still played out as one, however. It was a test position for a day trade b/c it seemed to have early support and has had a decent ST pullback ahead of earnings. It may be ready a little later, we'll see.

Interesting action on GOOG today, feels like it wants to close that gap at 527, they are pricing in a 25$ approx move in it so 500 or 550 i guess given the OI on the strikes...anyone taking a punt or sitting this one on the sides?
Not sure what to make of the weakness of GOOG today going into earnings, it can be a crafty devil, i guess we'll find out soon enough.

Where's that mood ring..mines probably black right now.

    OIH ... lovely!

I feel twice the nervous nellie for dumping NOV115 calls for a modest gain, even though the price action was hardly scary. Those would have been more than doubles by now.

The JAN125s (though also pared unjustifiably) are still around, cost approx 4.80, now bid 9.80. A little bit of patience, when it comes to both buying and selling, would serve me better.

And how about that SLW, sheilas and blokes? Silver still down almost a point, SLW now flat and near new highs.

Now if only HGSI would justify that nice volume bump with a breakout ...

true, big day in oil, breaking out with conviction. I know everyone(including myself) is skeptical about this run, but it is very similar to what happened in early May, and then oil kept going for another $15...

GLD - Bought a few Nov Calls. Stop out if spot Gold fails 1030. Aiming to buy more later if Oil stays up.

By the way, today (Thu already over in Asia) was THE day Indian consumers buy more gold than others, so think Spot gold has some more downside...

Rotate out of financials (since GS and C were blah) and into oil, if Google's good tonight they probably rotate to tech for the day tomorrow.

Gasoline Inventories Fall by 5.2M Barrels so more people are buying gas than expected and we get this buying spree today correct?

I'm trying to figure out __should I short UGA at this quad top $35? Probably best to wait for a first down day, and then short.

Dear Brinckley Was there any one thing that tipped you off to the refinerys? tia
  • Brinkley · 2 months ago
Just many, many bullish chart patterns in the group accompanied by bullish action-- observing lots of buying on dips, pullbacks that were shallower and briefer than standard, etc. I track $WTI/USO and OIH and both have been steadily strengthening. OIH and USO formed nice continuation patterns quite awhile back that I featured in a post at the time-- but that was the beginning of the move, although there was some backing and filling as they started to launch.

DNDN not far from the September high of $30.42, where it could either form a ST double top and reverse to fill the recent gap, or it could break out into new highs. I have a position and am watching this area closely.

  • Rosabarba · 2 months ago
Not to make too big a deal out of it, because there could be a delayed reaction in the cards, but SLW is drastically outperforming SLV. It doesn't usually seem to work that way on down days with miners vis. a vis. their metals. Perhaps sector rotation prompted by OIH and the steels is helping anything that falls into the Basic Materials class.

    Whaddaya think, moo?
  • moo · 2 months ago
I concur RB. Other sectors need to come to par, while others take a rest
here. As per SLW, as with most miners, these are to thought of as leveraged
instruments w/respect to the metal in day to day action. Overall, SLW is
actually still under priced with respect to the price of the metal at this
point imo. It should be above the price of SLV itself. There is alot of
catching up still if everything holds mostly the same market theme wise...

Took 500 on my BLK short, BAC earnings tomorrow, I chickened out holding it.

Got in FAS 2500 shares at avg of 91. I have a .25 trailer on it now. Might be the trick to trading FAS for me. Half order on a break out set up, if it fails put in the other half at the lowest price point (90.90 on this trade). If that fails take the loss.
